GREY MATTER SUGAR CUBES

Rise from the dead with some added “brain power” in your morning routine. These molded sugar cubes are made to perk up a weary soul’s coffee or tea.

Supplies:

White sugar

Water or flavoring extract

Food coloring (optional)

Candy mold

Basic instructions: Place sugar in a bowl. Add water or extract a few drops at a time. Stir well after each addition. Continue adding liquid until the mixture resembles a coarse sand that holds together when compacted. Tightly pack the mixture in a candy mold brushing any excess off the mold. Allow the sugar cubes to air dry (time will vary depending on the moisture level of the mix). Once dry, remove the sugar cubes from the candy mold. Store in an air tight container until ready to serve.

Extra notes: For this project, I used cocoa flavored cocktail bitters in place of water to add extra flavor. Using food coloring will alter the consistency; I alternated between extract and black food coloring until the desired texture and color was achieved. Use a small mold that holds no more than 1 teaspoon of sugar to avoid over-sweeting your morning beverage. Work over a tray to prevent scattering sugar. If the sugar cubes crumble when removed, they either were not moist enough when placed in the mold or not completely dry when removed from the mold.
